The radiator is designed to cool the liquid that is constantly passing through the engine, so if the radiator becomes partly blocked by corrosion, the engine can overheat. Also if the radiator begins to leak, the cooling system can be compromised.

Radiator material is thin and easily damaged so leaks are not uncommon. Holes in the radiator can generally be repaired for a portion of the cost of replacement. Blockages can be cleared by disassembling the radiator but with the latest radiators this is not always feasible.
The number one cause of overheating is corrosion inside the radiator. Coolant that has been in use for more than 2 years can actually break down and cause corrosion and even blockages and mixing more than one brand/type of coolant can also cause corrosion problems. Read more about this here.
